ANA Futura – sharing infrastructure and joining forces for translational research and education

Today we inaugurate ANA Futura in Flemingsberg, a building that has been revamped for the purpose of ground-breaking research and research-based education. Thanks to all of you who have helped realize this project and the best of luck to those of you who will be working in these premises. The opportunities you face are many and they are exciting.

ANA Futura is the name given to the modernized building, and there could hardly be a more appropriate choice. The very concept of ANA Futura is based on a vision that emanated from the local research community and that sprang from what was perceived as a lack of a common research infrastructure. The new premises should promote collaboration rather than fragmentation, and they should aim for a seamless interaction with the hospital based on shared aims and ambitions. And importantly: deeply embedded in the vision for ANA Futura is the realization that education will profit from a tight coupling to excellent research.

Tight coupling

We are not talking about just good intentions and statements befitting festive speeches: in ANA Futura, laboratories for educational purposes are well integrated with research laboratories. A tight coupling between education requires physical proximity between the two. This physical proximity is much in evidence in ANA Futura and makes this building a test bed for the ambitions incorporated in KI:s brand new Strategy 2030.

Strategy 2030 was adopted by the University Board (Konsistorium) on 15 April 2019. It explicitly states that education and research must be closely interconnected and that education and research at KI must stimulate one another. A close link between research and education whets the students’ interest in research, facilitates the recruitment of doctoral students and helps students adopt a scientific approach. Strategy 2030 also calls for a focus on pedagogical development to which ANA Futura will certainly contribute.

Serve as a hothouse

The vision of ANA Futura fits squarely within the vision of our new strategy also in other respects. ANA Futura aims to serve as a hothouse for translational research, in close interaction with the Karolinska University Hospital. Important areas for translational research include transplantation, regenerative medicine, cell therapy, infections, gastroenterology, cancer, neurology, and oral health, to name just a few. In a recent blog I highlighted the need to strengthen our interaction with the Karolinska University Hospital, our other collaborating hospitals, and the health care services at large. With ANA Futura in place the Flemingsberg campus will figure even more prominently in this endeavor.

In 2018 alone, 60 percent of our personnel and approximately 80 percent of our experimental research activity moved into new facilities. In this transition, ANA Futura represents the last chapter thus far. By tearing down the physical walls and redesigning working spaces, ANA Futura has removed many of the barriers that once hindered natural interaction between research groups, and even separated students from researchers.

Most important aspect

ANA Futura is a fine construction. But we should remind ourselves that the most important aspect of a building is not the building itself, but those that work and study there. You are the ones who should now aim for the vision and realize the ambitions embedded within it. You are the ones that must take advantage of the infrastructure put before you. And you are the ones who should ensure that you have fun when working here. Excellent research comes with high ambitions, a richness of perspectives, a keen attention to quality and ethics – and a great deal of fun!

Many have contributed to making this project a reality. It is not possible to name them all. To get to where we are today required the vision and coordination of KI’s department heads. Moving forward, it will now take the leadership of Maria Eriksdotter, Dean of KI South, to help lead and coordinate the further development of ANA Futura.

We should also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of our professional staff, including project coordinator Lars Frelin and the numerous working groups who moved 350 employees from:

the Department of Laboratory Medicine,
the Department of Medicine,
the Department of Dental Medicine and
the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology,

into more than 10 000 square meters of renovated space over seven floors.

My sincere thanks are also due to Akademiska Hus and all other actors that have contributed to this effort.

ANA Futura – delad infrastruktur och samverkan för translationell forskning och utbildning

Idag inviger vi ANA Futura i Flemingsberg, en byggnad som anpassats för banbrytande forskning och forskningsbaserad utbildning. Tack till er alla som har hjälpt till att förverkliga projektet och lyckönskningar till de som kommer att arbeta i dessa lokaler. Möjligheterna är många och spännande.

ANA Futura är namnet på den moderniserade byggnaden, och det kunde knappast vara ett lämpligare val. Själva konceptet ANA Futura bygger på en vision skapad av de lokala forskningsmiljön och det som uppfattades som en brist på en gemensam infrastruktur för forskning. Tanken med de nya lokalerna är att främja samarbete och förhindra fragmentering, och att sträva efter en sömlös interaktion med sjukhuset baserat på gemensamma mål och ambitioner. Och viktigare: djupt inbäddad i visionen för ANA Futura är insikten att utbildningen kommer att dra nytta av en nära koppling till excellent forskning.

Nära koppling

Vi talar inte bara om goda avsikter och uttalanden i festliga tal; i ANA Futura är laboratorier för utbildningsändamål väl integrerade med forskningslaboratorier. En nära koppling till utbildning kräver fysisk närhet mellan de två. Denna fysiska närhet är förkroppsligad i ANA Futura och gör den här byggnaden till en testbädd för de ambitioner som ingår i KI:s nya Strategi 2030.

Strategi 2030 antogs av konsistoriet (universitetsstyrelsen) den 15 april 2019. I strategin anges uttryckligen att utbildning och forskning måste vara nära sammankopplade och att utbildning och forskning vid KI ska stimulera varandra. En nära koppling mellan forskning och utbildning väcker studenternas intresse för forskning, underlättar rekrytering av doktorander och hjälper studenter att anta ett vetenskapligt tillvägagångssätt. Strategi 2030 har också ett fokus på den pedagogiska utvecklingen som ANA Futura helt säkert kommer att bidra med.

En källa för translationell forskning

Visionen för ANA Futura stämmer helt och hållet med visionen för vår nya strategi även i andra avseenden. ANA Futura syftar till att fungera som en källa för translationell forskning i nära samverkan med Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset. Viktiga områden för translationell forskning är transplantation, regenerativ medicin, cellterapi, infektioner, mikrobiologi, immunologi, gastroenterologi, cancer, neurologi och oral hälsa, för att bara nämna några. Nyligen betonade jag i en blogg behovet av att stärka vår interaktion med Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset, våra andra samarbetssjukhus samt hälso- och sjukvården i stort. Med ANA Futura på plats kommer Flemingsbergs campus att vara ännu mer framträdande i denna strävan.

Bara under 2018 så flyttade 60 procent av vår personal och cirka 80 procent av vår experimentella forskningsverksamhet till nya anläggningar. ANA Futura representerar det sista kapitlet i denna övergångsfas. Den viktigaste aspekten

ANA Futura är en utmärkt konstruktion, men vi bör påminna oss om att den viktigaste aspekten av en byggnad inte är själva byggnaden, utan de som arbetar och studerar där. Det är ni som nu ska ta till er visionen och realisera ambitionerna inbäddade i den. Det är ni som måste dra nytta av den infrastruktur som ligger framför er och det är ni som ska se till att ni har kul när ni arbetar här. Utmärkt forskning kommer med höga ambitioner, en rikedom av perspektiv, stor uppmärksamhet på kvalitet och etik – och att ha mycket roligt!
