KI is not only Macchiarini

Of course, for me as for many others, last week was dominated by the so called Macchiarini case. However, I still found some time to join activities that show what KI really is and how we can contribute to society. On Tuesday afternoon, I joined an information meeting about the 4D project (4 D stands for 4 diagnosis) where KI and the Stockholm County Council (SCC) have joined forces with the ambition that new knowledge should be quickly translated into earlier diagnosis and improved clinical practice. Informatics is a central theme of the project. The project has now reached a phase where working practices and services are rolled out into clinical practice. It is amazing what has been achieved in this relatively short time.

Meeting in KTH new building Technology for Health

On Wednesday, I joined the board meeting of the Flemingsberg Science. Flemingsberg Science was established in 2011 by Karolinska Institutet, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Södertörn University College, Stockholm County Council and the local communities of Huddinge and Botkyrka, to enhance the innovation and business community of Flemingsberg.

The meeting was held in the new building, Technology for Health, which hosts the School of Technology and Health from Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and the Swedish Red Cross University College. We discussed interesting initiatives on cross-disciplinary projects stemming from the fact that within a relatively small geographically confined area we have have four universities and higher educational authorities, with complementary expertise.

It is with quite some expectation that I note that it is only a little more than a year before the building next to Technology for Health will be ready. The building is named Neo and will mainly host KI activities. KI is currently involved in several important infrastructure projects in Flemingsberg leading to a vital upgrade of our research and education facilities. Alongside Neo, there is a project called Lab for the future, a major remake of existing facilites at Alfred Nobels allé 8. And earlier this year a completely new part of the same building was opened. The City, as the area is called, is a part of the Future Learning Environments’ project and offers modern, flexible learning spaces for our students. The majority of our students spends most of their classes in Flemingsberg.

Saturday evening I had the pleasure of meeting some of our newest students as I joined the Medical Students’ Association gasque, where they “accept” new members in a traditional way. So many happy students ready to start an education that are in high demand by society. My message was, we need you all! We need both high quantity – many students – and high quality.
