Open Access Week at Karolinska Institutet
As of July 1, the Bibsam Consortium in Sweden cancelled the agreement with Elsevier. As I wrote earlier, this means that Swedish universities do not have access to articles published in Elsevier’s journals after that date.
This is an issue with much bigger importance than one cancelled agreement. It is about the very essence of making knowledge accessible to the world.
It is about the importance of open access.
Access to information – irrespective of geography and economy – is fundamental and a core mission of KI. It is in society’s interest – and also in our own interest as scientists – that what we publish actually reaches all those who are in need of new knowledge and insight.
This issue, and others, will surely be discussed when the the International Open Access Week commences on Monday, October 22. Open Access is a very important and highly prioritized subject for Karolinska Institutet and other universities in Sweden and beyond.

Perspectives of Open Access are presented by the library staff at Torget in Solna or in Flemingsberg on a daily basis throughout the week. In addition, the KI Library will publish a new KIB blog post every day.
The presentations are held in English and questions are welcome. The presentations will be filmed.
