\u201cWe are facing health challenges of increasing complexity\u201d. This is the title of an article in Dagens Medicin 9 April (original title: \u201cVi st\u00e4lls inf\u00f6r mer komplexa h\u00e4lsoutmaningar<\/a>\u201d). This article is authored by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General WHO, Lena Hallengren, Swedish Minister for Health and Social Affairs, and Peter Eriksson, Minister for International Development Cooperation.<\/p>\n

The word \u201ccomplexity\u201d catches much of what is currently happening in the realm of human health. We are in the midst of a slow revolution where questions related to health permeate arenas and sectors where such questions previously did not necessarily belong. \u00a0This revolution is driven by new knowledge: we know that health is impacted by a range of factors that extend well beyond lifestyle and genetics. The revolution is driven by an increased prioritization of health and wellbeing and a growing attention to the gross inequities worldwide when it comes to access to health and health care. And it is driven by the extant and impending effects of human activity: we are approaching and transgressing planetary boundaries, forcing us to see health in a much broader context than before.<\/p>\n

Cross-sectoral<\/strong><\/h4>\n

In sum, health is becoming increasingly cross-sectoral. Climate changes are impacting human health, with heat waves being a concern even here in Sweden. Migration and demographic changes require that we think anew\u00a0on how to uphold health as a human right. And we need to consider the socio-economic, commercial, and political determinants of health<\/a>. All of these determinants impinge on and often constrain the choices we make when it comes to our own lifestyle.<\/p>\n

The complexity of health is brought to the fore in UN Agenda 2030 with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While goal 3 addresses health directly, health is very much in evidence in as many as 14 of the 17 goals, and in more than 50 out of the 169 different targets. The SDGS inspire us \u2013 and compel us \u2013 to view health in a broad setting. And there should be no misunderstanding: the SDGs cannot be dismissed as something remote. They concern us all \u2013 both directly and indirectly. Directly \u2013 because the ambitions embedded in the SDGs are relevant for our own health care system here in Sweden, and\u00a0\u2013 indirectly \u2013 because we as a university must take a responsibility that extends beyond our national border. \u00a0We must strive for a better health for all<\/em>, as explicitly stated in our new vision.<\/p>\n

Complexity of health<\/strong><\/h4>\n

To stay relevant as a university we must be willing to address the increasing complexity of health, not least when it comes to our education of future health professionals and leaders. This was among the issues addressed in our conference \u201cRethinking higher education\u201d on Saturday, March 30. In collaboration with G\u00f6teborgs universitet<\/a>, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm<\/a> (KTH) and The Royal Swedish Academy of Science<\/a> (KVA), we asked how we, students, teachers, researchers and other higher education professionals, can take responsibility for, and be inspired by, the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030<\/a>. Among the invited guests and speakers were the Rt Hon Helen Clark\u00a0\u2013 former prime minister of New Zealand and head of UNDP<\/a> – and Sir Michael Marmot \u2013 chair of the 2008 WHO commission \u201cClosing the gap in a generation<\/a>\u201d. More than 500 participants \u2013 many of them students \u2013 attended the plenary lectures as well as a range of workshops dedicated to the overriding question of how educational programs can be better adapted to societal challenges. The concrete suggestions that came out of these workshops will be theme for an upcoming blog.<\/p>\n

Work more closely<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Back to the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Dr. Tedros visited our campus on April 9. He was kind enough to accept my invitation to give a speech on Research and Higher Education for Health \u2013 in the context of Agenda 2030<\/a>. <\/em>Together with students, teachers, researchers and other KI staff, Dr. Tedros discussed how WHO and KI can work more closely together in order to realize the ambitions embedded in the UN Agenda 2030 and in WHO\u2019s own priorities. The event was arranged in Biomedicum \u2013 our new hub for basic experimental research. This was an appropriate venue as much of the discussion revolved around the significance of basic research in our endeavors to tackle current and future challenges in the realm of global health.<\/p>\n

After taking office Dr Tedros has taken steps to lift research higher up on WHO\u2019s agenda. He has appointed a chief scientist and established an academy for discussions on issues related to research and education. This bodes well for the future collaboration between WHO and KI. This collaboration is already quite extensive, with three WHO collaborating centres currently affiliated with our university. But we can certainly do more if we let ourselves be inspired by the complexity and intricacy of the challenges ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cVi st\u00e4lls inf\u00f6r mer komplexa h\u00e4lsoutmaningar\u201d. Det var rubriken p\u00e5 en debattartikel publicerad i Dagens Medicin den 9 april<\/a>, underskriven av WHO:s generaldirekt\u00f6r Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, socialminister Lena Hallengren och ministern f\u00f6r internationellt utvecklingsarbete Peter Eriksson.<\/p>\n

Ordet “komplex” f\u00e5ngar mycket av det som h\u00e4nder just nu. Vi \u00e4r mitt i en l\u00e5ngsam revolution d\u00e4r fr\u00e5gor relaterade till h\u00e4lsa i allt h\u00f6gre grad integreras i sektorer som tidigare var helt separerade fr\u00e5n detta. Den h\u00e4r revolutionen drivs fram\u00e5t av ny kunskap: vi vet att h\u00e4lsan p\u00e5verkas av en rad faktorer som str\u00e4cker sig l\u00e5ngt ut\u00f6ver livsstil och genetik.<\/p>\n

Revolutionen drivs av en \u00f6kad prioritering av h\u00e4lsa och v\u00e4lf\u00e4rdsfr\u00e5gor och en \u00f6kande medvetenhet om de stora oj\u00e4mlikheterna vi ser v\u00e4rlden \u00f6ver n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller tillg\u00e5ng till h\u00e4lso- och sjukv\u00e5rd. Och den drivs ocks\u00e5 av m\u00e4nniskans egen p\u00e5verkan p\u00e5 v\u00e5r sam- och framtid: Vi n\u00e4rmar oss och till och med \u00f6verskrider v\u00e5r planets gr\u00e4nser.<\/p>\n

Allt detta tvingar oss att se h\u00e4lsa i ett mycket bredare sammanhang \u00e4n tidigare.<\/p>\n

Sammantaget blir h\u00e4lsa alltmer sektors\u00f6vergripande. Klimatf\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar p\u00e5verkar m\u00e4nniskors h\u00e4lsa, d\u00e4r v\u00e4rmeb\u00f6ljor skapar oro \u00e4ven h\u00e4r i Sverige. Migration och demografiska f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringar kr\u00e4ver att vi t\u00e4nker p\u00e5 hur h\u00e4lsan ska kunna uppr\u00e4tth\u00e5llas som en m\u00e4nsklig r\u00e4ttighet. Och vi m\u00e5ste \u00f6verv\u00e4ga de socioekonomiska, kommersiella och politiska determinanterna f\u00f6r h\u00e4lsa<\/a>. Alla dessa determinanter p\u00e5verkar och begr\u00e4nsar ofta de val vi g\u00f6r n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller v\u00e5r egen livsstil.<\/p>\n

H\u00e4lsokomplexiteten framh\u00e4vs i FN:s Agenda 2030 med sina 17 h\u00e5llbarhets- och utvecklingsm\u00e5l (SDG). M\u00e5l 3 handlar om h\u00e4lsa direkt, men h\u00e4lsa finns ocks\u00e5 med direkt eller indirekt i ytterligare 13 av m\u00e5len och i mer \u00e4n 50 av de 169 olika delm\u00e5l. H\u00e5llbarhetsm\u00e5len inspirerar oss \u2013 och tvingar oss \u2013 att se h\u00e4lsa i en bred kontext. Och det finns inte l\u00e4ngre n\u00e5gon tvekan: Dessa m\u00e5l kan inte avf\u00e4rdas som n\u00e5got avl\u00e4gset och de ber\u00f6r oss alla.<\/p>\n

I samarbete med G\u00f6teborgs universitet, Kungliga Tekniska H\u00f6gskolan i Stockholm (KTH) och Kungliga Svenska vetenskapsakademin (KVA), arrangerade KI konferensen “Rethinking higher education<\/a>” l\u00f6rdagen den 30 mars.\u00a0 H\u00e4r fr\u00e5gade vi hur vi, studenter, l\u00e4rare, forskare och andra medarbetare kan ta ansvar f\u00f6r och inspireras av m\u00e5len i FN:s agenda 2030.<\/p>\n

Bland de inbjudna g\u00e4sterna och talarna fanns Helen Clark \u2013 tidigare premi\u00e4rminister f\u00f6r Nya Zeeland och chef f\u00f6r UNDP \u2013 och Michael Marmot \u2013 ordf\u00f6rande f\u00f6r WHO-kommissionen 2008 “Closing the gap in one generation”. Mer \u00e4n 500 deltagare \u2013 m\u00e5nga av dem studenter \u2013 deltog i plenumf\u00f6rel\u00e4sningarna och i ett flertal workshops som tog upp den \u00f6vergripande fr\u00e5gan om hur h\u00f6gre utbildning b\u00e4ttre kan anpassas till samh\u00e4llsutmaningar i FN:s Agenda 2030.<\/p>\n

En dryg vecka senare, den 9 april, var det dags f\u00f6r n\u00e4sta sp\u00e4nnande bes\u00f6k p\u00e5 KI:s campus Solna. WHO:s generaldirekt\u00f6r Dr Tedros var v\u00e4nlig nog att acceptera min inbjudan att tala om forskning och h\u00f6gre utbildning f\u00f6r h\u00e4lsa \u2013 inom ramen f\u00f6r Agenda 2030 och tillsammans med studenter, l\u00e4rare, forskare och andra KI-anst\u00e4llda,<\/p>\n

Dr. Tedros tog bland annat upp hur WHO och KI kan arbeta n\u00e4rmare tillsammans f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rverkliga ambitionerna i FN:s Agenda 2030 och i WHO:s egna prioriteringar. Evenemanget arrangerades i Biomedicum \u2013 v\u00e5rt nya nav f\u00f6r grundl\u00e4ggande experimentell forskning och en l\u00e4mplig plats eftersom s\u00e5 mycket av diskussionen handlade om betydelsen av grundforskning i v\u00e5ra anstr\u00e4ngningar f\u00f6r att ta itu med nuvarande och framtida utmaningar inom den globala h\u00e4lsan.<\/p>\n

Efter tilltr\u00e4det som GD f\u00f6r WHO har Dr Tedros vidtagit \u00e5tg\u00e4rder f\u00f6r att lyfta forskning h\u00f6gre upp p\u00e5 organisationens dagordning. Han har utsett en chefsforskare och etablerat en akademi f\u00f6r diskussioner om fr\u00e5gor som r\u00f6r forskning och utbildning. Detta skapar en utm\u00e4rkt och relevant ing\u00e5ng till det framtida samarbetet mellan WHO och KI \u2013 ett samarbete \u00e4r redan ganska omfattande, med tre WHO collaborating centers knutna till KI.<\/p>\n

Men vi kan g\u00f6ra mer om vi l\u00e5ter oss inspireras av komplexiteten i de utmaningar vi st\u00e5r inf\u00f6r.<\/p>\n
