Four weeks ago I said that we must join forces to get through the current pandemic in the best possible way.<\/p>\n<p>When I look back I see that this is exactly what happened: you \u2013 our staff and students \u2013 have joined forces to adjust to the new situation. During my more than 40 years in academia, I have never experienced anything similar when it comes to the speed of change \u2013 in the way we work, in the way we teach, and in the way we learn. We have seen how flexibility, creativity, and solidarity have been mustered to grapple with circumstances and challenges of unprecedented complexity and gravity.<\/p>\n<p>What drives us through these most difficult of times is our collective concern for those that are hit \u2013 and hit hard \u2013 by the current pandemic. Our concern for the patients also extends into our support of the health care personnel\u00a0that work day and night to take care of those that are seriously ill. In this extraordinary situation we see that many of our qualified students and staff members directly engage in the clinic and intensive care. I embrace and encourage your engagement, and we \u2013 the university leadership \u2013 do what we can to remove every hurdle that we see.<\/p>\n<p>KI:s engagement in the current crisis must be aligned with our long term commitment. As an important pillar of society our university cannot close down. We have to do double duty \u2013 we must engage in the current crisis and at the same time keep up our research and education so as to be better prepared for the next. This is a difficult balancing act. But we will succeed. We also need to maintain our international engagement as the current pandemic is likely to strike particularly hard in resource poor settings.<\/p>\n<p>At this point I must say how impressed and proud I am by all your efforts to meet the demand for education and research in this extraordinary situation.<\/p>\n<p>Our education has been moved to a digital platform, and we have managed to safeguard our clinical training, thanks to an excellent cooperation with the regional authorities. Educational programs on Covid-19 have attracted tens of thousands of users, and intensive research is being done on vaccines, new treatments, new tests, and new approaches to the understanding of the corona virus and its effects on humans and humanity. Through education and research we help mitigate the fallout of the current pandemic.\u00a0 And through the same education and research we build the resilience and knowledge that are needed to shoulder the next crisis. History tells us that it will come.<\/p>\n<p>We are fighting the\u00a0<em><strong>new<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0corona virus. This small word \u201cnew\u201d embodies what is the major challenge in this fight: that this virus does not come with a manual that tells us how to handle it. We have to cope with\u00a0<em>uncertainty<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 not only when it comes to prospects for prevention and treatment \u2013 but also when it comes to what measures should be taken at the societal level. Uncertainty calls for modesty and critical judgments, and should not be allowed to undermine trust. We are all in this together.<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty also pertains to the future operation of our own organization. We simply do not know how long this extraordinary situation will last \u2013 how long we have to work, teach, and learn under the imperative of social distancing. We may be talking about several months. This calls for flexibility and creativity when plans are laid for our future activities. Again there is a need to join forces. Again I am sure we will do this successfully.<\/p>\n<p>Finally: I would like to reach out to those of you who are far away from your family and beloved ones. For you the current situation may prove particularly challenging. Don\u2019t hesitate to ask for support. A university is a community and we are all here to help.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for your attention.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"page-title\">KI under f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringstryck: ny video f\u00f6r medarbetare och studenter<\/h1>\n<p><em>I dag publicerade jag en ny video riktad till medarbetare och studenter vid KI. Se klippet ovan. H\u00e4r \u00e4r en svensk \u00f6vers\u00e4ttning av det jag s\u00e4ger i videon:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fyra veckor har g\u00e5tt sedan jag publicerade min f\u00f6rra video till KI:s studenter och medarbetare. D\u00e5 sa jag att vi m\u00e5ste agera tillsammans f\u00f6r att klara pandemin p\u00e5 b\u00e4sta m\u00f6jliga s\u00e4tt.<\/p>\n<p>N\u00e4r jag nu tittar tillbaka s\u00e5 ser jag att det \u00e4r exakt vad som h\u00e4nde: medarbetare och studenter har g\u00e5tt samman f\u00f6r att hantera situationen. Under mina mer \u00e4n 40 \u00e5r inom akademin har jag aldrig upplevt n\u00e5got liknande n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller f\u00f6r\u00e4ndringstryck n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller hur vi arbetar, forskar och undervisar. Vi ser hur flexibilitet, kreativitet och solidaritet har utvecklats f\u00f6r att m\u00f6ta omst\u00e4ndigheter och utmaningar av extraordin\u00e4r komplexitet och allvarlighetsgrad.<\/p>\n<p>Det som bland annat driver oss genom dessa sv\u00e5ra tider \u00e4r v\u00e5r kollektiva oro f\u00f6r de som drabbas &#8211; och drabbas h\u00e5rt &#8211; av pandemin. V\u00e5r oro f\u00f6r patienternas h\u00e4lsa str\u00e4cker sig ocks\u00e5 in i v\u00e5rt st\u00f6d av v\u00e5rdpersonalen som arbetar dag och natt f\u00f6r att ta hand om de som \u00e4r allvarligt sjuka. I denna extrema situation ser vi att m\u00e5nga av v\u00e5ra kvalificerade studenter och medarbetare arbetar inom v\u00e5rden. Jag uppmuntrar detta engagemang och vi, universitetsledningen, g\u00f6r vad vi kan f\u00f6r att ta bort alla hinder f\u00f6r dessa insatser.<\/p>\n<p>KI:s engagemang i den nuvarande krisen m\u00e5ste anpassas till v\u00e5rt l\u00e5ngsiktiga \u00e5tagande. Som en viktig pelare i samh\u00e4llet kan v\u00e5rt universitet inte l\u00e4gga ner verksamheten. Tv\u00e4rtom m\u00e5ste vi vara aktiva i den nu p\u00e5g\u00e5ende pandemin och samtidigt forts\u00e4tta v\u00e5r forskning och utbildning f\u00f6r att bli b\u00e4ttre f\u00f6rberedda f\u00f6r n\u00e4sta. Detta \u00e4r en sv\u00e5r balansering. Men vi kommer att lyckas. Vi m\u00e5ste ocks\u00e5 beh\u00e5lla v\u00e5rt internationella engagemang eftersom den nuvarande pandemin troligen kommer att sl\u00e5 s\u00e4rskilt h\u00e5rt i resursfattiga milj\u00f6er.<\/p>\n<p>Jag m\u00e5ste s\u00e4ga hur imponerad jag \u00e4r \u00f6ver alla er anstr\u00e4ngningar att m\u00f6ta efterfr\u00e5gan p\u00e5 utbildning och forskning i denna extraordin\u00e4ra situation.<\/p>\n<p>V\u00e5r utbildning har flyttats till en digital plattform och vi har lyckats hantera st\u00f6rre delen av v\u00e5r verksamhetsf\u00f6rlagda utbildning tack vare ett utm\u00e4rkt samarbete med Region Stockholm. KI:s e-kurser om covid-19 har lockat tiotusentals anv\u00e4ndare och forskning p\u00e5 vacciner, nya behandlingar, nya tester och nya metoder f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rst\u00e5 coronaviruset och dess effekter p\u00e5 m\u00e4nniskor \u00e4r intensiv. Genom utbildning och forskning hj\u00e4lper vi till att mildra effekterna av pandemin och bygger den motst\u00e5ndskraft och kunskap som beh\u00f6vs f\u00f6r att ta n\u00e4sta kris. Historien s\u00e4ger att det kommer att komma.<\/p>\n<p>Vi k\u00e4mpar mot det nya coronaviruset. Det lilla ordet &#8220;nya&#8221; f\u00f6rkroppsligar vad som \u00e4r den st\u00f6rsta utmaningen i detta: att viruset inte kommer med en manual som ber\u00e4ttar hur vi ska hantera det. Vi m\u00e5ste hantera os\u00e4kerhet inte bara n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller m\u00f6jligheter till f\u00f6rebyggande och behandling, utan ocks\u00e5 n\u00e4r det g\u00e4ller vilka \u00e5tg\u00e4rder som ska vidtas p\u00e5 samh\u00e4llsniv\u00e5. Os\u00e4kerhet kr\u00e4ver \u00f6dmjukhet och kritiska bed\u00f6mningar och ska inte leda till att f\u00f6rtroende undergr\u00e4vs. Vi \u00e4r alla i detta tillsammans.<\/p>\n<p>Os\u00e4kerhet g\u00e4ller ocks\u00e5 den n\u00e4rmaste framtiden f\u00f6r v\u00e5r egen organisation. Vi vet helt enkelt inte hur l\u00e4nge denna extraordin\u00e4ra situation kommer att forts\u00e4tta &#8211; hur l\u00e4nge vi m\u00e5ste arbeta, forska och undervisa mer eller mindre p\u00e5 distans. Det kan handla om flera m\u00e5nader. Detta kr\u00e4ver flexibilitet och kreativitet n\u00e4r vi planerar fram\u00e5t. \u00c5terigen finns det ett behov av att g\u00f6ra detta samordnat, tillsammans. \u00c5terigen \u00e4r jag s\u00e4ker p\u00e5 att vi kommer att g\u00f6ra detta framg\u00e5ngsrikt.<\/p>\n<p>Slutligen: Jag skulle vilja rikta mig till de av er som \u00e4r l\u00e5ngt borta fr\u00e5n familj, n\u00e4ra och k\u00e4ra. Den nuvarande situationen kan vara s\u00e4rskilt utmanande just f\u00f6r er. Tveka inte att be om st\u00f6d och hj\u00e4lp.
