{"id":4929,"date":"2021-05-10T07:11:03","date_gmt":"2021-05-10T05:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.ki.se\/rektor\/?p=4929"},"modified":"2021-05-11T19:07:11","modified_gmt":"2021-05-11T17:07:11","slug":"stockholm-life-science-conference-may-25-reframing-life-science-post-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.ki.se\/rektor\/2021\/05\/10\/stockholm-life-science-conference-may-25-reframing-life-science-post-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"Stockholm Life Science Conference May 25: Reframing Life Science Post-Pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>N\u00e5got f\u00f6rkortad svensk version nedan<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in debating the future of the life sciences in the post-pandemic era? &nbsp;If so, I invite you to register for the upcoming digital meeting, physically anchored in KI\u00b4s Flemingsberg campus where the life sciences are much in evidence. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jirango.com\/cms\/register\/k0?lang=eng\">Register for the Stockholm Life Science Conference here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karolinska Institutet\u2019s strategic plan,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/staff.ki.se\/strategy-2030-creating-karolinska-institutets-future-together\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strategy 2030<\/a>, stands as a &nbsp;commitment to a deeper and broader engagement with societal life science partners, in our endeavor to address &nbsp;tomorrow\u00b4s health challenges. When we fleshed out our strategy plan early 2019, we could not foresee how urgent and critical that expanded collaboration would be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past 16 months alone, our faculty, staff and students have worked closely with a wide range of academic, healthcare, industry and societal partners to adapt both clinical and theoretical education; develop COVID-19 tests, analysis capacity, and treatment and vaccine candidates; accelerate decision-making processes to meet pandemic-related challenges, and launch over 350 research studies. This important work continues, and I am impressed every day by the ingenuity and accomplishments of our employees and students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Numerous steps<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>KI has taken numerous meaningful steps forward to advance our long-term life science priorities. In line with Strategy 2030, we have adopted a clear role in the development of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.government.se\/information-material\/2020\/11\/swedens-national-life-sciences-strategy\/\">national<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sll.se\/om-regionstockholm\/forskning-och-innovation\/forskning-och-innovation-for-regional-utveckling\/\">regional life science strategies<\/a>; deepened our relationship with Region Stockholm in research, education and strategic development; advanced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/ki-and-karolinska-university-hospital-establish-joint-precision-medicine-centre\">precision medicine<\/a>&nbsp;and health data initiatives; and launched the KI Life Science Council to provide guidance on strategic priorities, among other key steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While great progress has been made, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for deepened collaboration and collective engagement of the entire spectrum of life science actors (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forskasverige.se\/ny-rapport-medicinsk-forskning-och-utveckling-en-forutsattning-for-att-hantera-framtida-halsohot-2021-04-28\/\">see Forska!Sveriges new report on this topic,<\/a>&nbsp;in Swedish).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important questions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>How can the life science sector help us &nbsp;fill the knowledge gaps that have been unveiled during the current pandemic, and how can the life science sector help us \u201cbuild back better\u201d and create the conditions needed for a healthy life also for future generations? &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an attempt to respond to these questions I have taken the initiative to host a conference scheduled for May 25. The &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/stockholm-life-science-conference-2021\">2021 Stockholm Life Science Conference: Reframing Life Science Post-Pandemic<\/a> is &nbsp;organized in collaboration with my fellow Stockholm Trio university presidents Sigbritt Karlsson (KTH) and Astrid S\u00f6derbergh Widding (Stockholm University), and Region Stockholm\u2019s County Mayor &nbsp;Ir\u00e9ne Svenonius. The conference will have an interdisciplinary perspective, acknowledging the need to reach beyond medicine and the health care sector. Technology, social sciences and the humanities are essential elements of a post pandemic life science sector where we have to transform our societies for a better preparedness for health. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Expanded vision<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During the conference we will re-examine the current and future role of the sector and explore an expanded vision for life science that includes prevention of ill-health, implementation of evidence-based knowledge, accountability for joint action, and \u201ca universal preparedness for health\u201d that draws upon multiple sectors and disciplines. Nkengasong (Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Eleni Aklillu and Anna Mia Ekstr\u00f6m (Professors at KI), &nbsp;Helena Strig\u00e5rd (Director General of SwedenBio), Bj\u00f6rn Zo\u00ebga (CEO of Karolinska University Hospital), \u00c5sa Kristoferson Hedlund (Chair of the Swedish COVID Association), Anna Sandstr\u00f6m (Director of Science Policy and Relations-Europe at AstraZeneca), Jenni Nordborg (National Coordinator for Life Sciences at the Swedish Government Offices), Malin Parkler (Managing Director of Pfizer Sweden), and Staffan Ingvarsson (CEO Stockholm Business Region AB), among many others.&nbsp;There will be a welcome address by the local host \u2013 Maria Eriksdotter (dean KI South) \u2013 and Ir\u00e9ne Svenonius (county mayor Region Stockholm).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These expert speakers and panelists will share lessons learned over the past year, examine the current state of the life science sector, and discuss joint actions to strengthen societal resilience against future pandemics and health crises. \u00a0We will be guided through the day by moderator and KI alumnus Nina Rawal, founder of Emerging Health Ventures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am convinced that UN\u00b4s Agenda 2030 with its sustainable development goals will inspire the upcoming discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key role<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The life science sector is poised to play a key role in building universal preparedness for health. N\u00e4r vi nu ser tillbaka p\u00e5 det senaste \u00e5ret \u00e4r det sl\u00e5ende hur angel\u00e4get detta blivit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under de senaste 16 m\u00e5naderna har KI:s forskare, medarbetare och studenter samverkat n\u00e4ra med en m\u00e4ngd andra akt\u00f6rer f\u00f6r att st\u00e4lla om klinisk och teoretisk utbildning. utveckla och ut\u00f6ka kapaciteten f\u00f6r covid-19-tester, forskning om behandling och vaccin och liknande. Bara som ett exempel kan n\u00e4mnas att KI initierat \u00f6ver 350 pandemirelaterade forskningsstudier. Det h\u00e4r arbetet forts\u00e4tter \u2013 jag imponeras varje dag av alla de prestationer som utf\u00f6rs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">M\u00e5nga steg<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>KI har ocks\u00e5 tagit m\u00e5nga viktiga steg fram\u00e5t f\u00f6r att fr\u00e4mja v\u00e5ra l\u00e5ngsiktiga life science- prioriteringar. I linje med m\u00e5len i Strategi 2030 har vi intagit en tydligare och mer ledande roll i utvecklingen av nationella och regionala livsvetenskapliga strategier, f\u00f6rdjupat v\u00e5r relation med Region Stockholm inom forskning, utbildning och strategisk utveckling, tagit olika former av initiativ g\u00e4llande precisionsmedicin och h\u00e4lsodatainitiativ med mera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Att det finns ett stort behov av samverkan mellan olika life science-akt\u00f6rer har pandemin tvekl\u00f6st visat. Se g\u00e4rna organisationen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forskasverige.se\/ny-rapport-medicinsk-forskning-och-utveckling-en-forutsattning-for-att-hantera-framtida-halsohot-2021-04-28\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forska!Sveriges nya rapport <\/a>, som bland annat tar upp just detta. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viktiga fr\u00e5gor<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Det har ocks\u00e5 v\u00e4ckt viktiga fr\u00e5gor om vilken roll life science-sektorn kan och b\u00f6r ha f\u00f6r att till\u00e4mpa det vi har l\u00e4rt oss under pandemin. Det handlar om att bygga en b\u00e4ttre beredskap och bidra till att skapa f\u00f6ruts\u00e4ttningar f\u00f6r ett mer h\u00e5llbart liv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Med den bakgrunden har jag tagit initiativet till Stockholm Life Science Conference 2021 den 25 maj. Konferensen arrangeras samarbete med rektorerna f\u00f6r \u00f6vriga universitet i Stockholm trio; Sigbritt Karlsson (KTH) och Astrid S\u00f6derbergh Widding (Stockholms universitet) samt Region Stockholms regionr\u00e5d Ir\u00e9ne Svenonius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ut\u00f6kad vision<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Under konferensen kommer vi att diskutera sektorns nuvarande och potentiella roll och utforska en ut\u00f6kad vision f\u00f6r life sceince som inkluderar prevention och f\u00f6rebyggande av oh\u00e4lsa, b\u00e4ttre implementering av evidensbaserad kunskap, ansvar f\u00f6r gemensamma \u00e5tg\u00e4rder och \u201den universell beredskap f\u00f6r h\u00e4lsa \u201dsom bygger p\u00e5 att flera sektorer och discipliner arbetar mer organiserat och strukturerat tillsammans f\u00f6r att st\u00e4rka samh\u00e4llets f\u00f6rm\u00e5ga att hantera fr\u00e5gor som r\u00f6r h\u00e4lsa f\u00f6r alla.
