This morning it was time for the official inauguration of the university alliance Stockholm Trio’s<\/a> joint EU office in Brussels. Preparatory activities have been running for just over six months, and now we are heading for a more outward-looking and proactive engagement with EU’s strategies and funding programs. We are stepping up our presence and visibility in the EU in the light of the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation, Horizon Europe<\/a>, with a budget of just over \u20ac 95 billion. And we are stepping up our presence to contribute more actively to EU\u00b4s strategies for research, innovation and higher education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As one of the major beneficiaries of EUs investments in research and development, we have a responsibility to help develop strategies that put research and education center stage in our attempts to build a more resilient society after COVID-19. \u00a0In this endeavor we must not lose sight of UN’s Agenda 2030<\/a> which tells us to mitigate the inequities that have been unveiled and deepened during the present pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unsung hero<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

And we must not lose sight of fundamental research \u2013 the unsung hero in our battle towards the new virus. Decades of fundamental research is what paved the way for the ultrarapid development of new vaccines and diagnostics for the current pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Stockholm trio was started by Karolinska Institutet, KTH and Stockholm University in 2019 with the aim of developing, highlighting and jointly benefiting from the internationally prominent research and education that are carried out in the individual member institutions. The underlying idea is that we together form a complete and comprehensive academic environment with medicine, technology, science, humanities, law and social sciences \u2013 the range of disciplines that need to synergize and interact in order to be prepared for the challenges ahead. KI, KTH and Stockholm University combined conduct just over 30 per cent of all academic research and postgraduate education in Sweden and have 15\u201320 per cent of all students at undergraduate and advanced level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advance our positions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As we now take the official step into the EU through our joint Brussels office, we create the opportunity to advance our positions not only within the EU but also in increased collaboration on issues related to research and higher education with other parts of the world. The need for a global approach was one of the issues I emphasized when I spoke at the seminar earlier today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00d6ppnandet av Brysselkontoret en milstolpe: Tid att ta st\u00f6rre ansvar f\u00f6r att bidra<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I f\u00f6rmiddags var det dags f\u00f6r den officiella invigningen av universitetsalliansen Stockholm trios<\/a> gemensamma EU-kontor i Bryssel. F\u00f6rberedande verksamhet har varit ig\u00e5ng ett dryg halv\u00e5r, men nu har tiden kommit f\u00f6r en mer ut\u00e5triktad och proaktiv inriktning. Det h\u00e4r \u00e4r en mycket viktigt och betydelsefull markering av v\u00e5r n\u00e4rvaro och synlighet i EU \u2013 inte minst i skenet av EU:s omfattande ramprogram f\u00f6r forskning och innovation, Horizon Europe<\/a>, med en budget p\u00e5 drygt 95 miljarder euro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Som en av de st\u00f6rsta mottagarna av EU:s st\u00f6d f\u00f6r forskning och utveckling har vi ett ansvar att hj\u00e4lpa till att utveckla strategier som s\u00e4tter forskning och utbildning i centrum n\u00e4r vi nu m\u00e5ste bygga ett mer motst\u00e5ndskraftigt samh\u00e4lle efter covid-pandemin. I detta f\u00e5r vi inte gl\u00f6mma FN:s Agenda 2030 med m\u00e5len att minska oj\u00e4mlikheter i bland annat h\u00e4lsa som har tydliggjorts och f\u00f6rdjupats under pandemin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bortgl\u00f6mda hj\u00e4lten<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Och vi f\u00e5r inte gl\u00f6mma bort grundforskning \u2013 den n\u00e5got bortgl\u00f6mda hj\u00e4lten i kampen mot det coronaviruset. \u00c5rtionden av grundl\u00e4ggande forskning har varit det som banat v\u00e4g f\u00f6r den extremt snabb utvecklingen av nya vacciner och diagnostik som vi sett det senaste \u00e5ret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stockholm trio startades av Karolinska Institutet, KTH och Stockholms universitet 2019 med syftet att utveckla och lyfta fram den internationellt framst\u00e5ende forsknings- och utbildningsmilj\u00f6 som de tre universiteten bildar i Stockholmsregionen. Den bakomliggande tanken \u00e4r att vi tillsammans bildar en komplett akademisk milj\u00f6 med medicin, teknik, naturvetenskap, humaniora, juridik och samh\u00e4llsvetenskap.\u00a0Faktum \u00e4r att KI, KTH och Stockholms universitet bedriver drygt 30 procent av all akademisk forskning och forskarutbildning i Sverige och har 15\u201320 procent av alla studenter p\u00e5 grundniv\u00e5 och avancerad niv\u00e5. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Flytta fram positionerna<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

N\u00e4r vi nu tar det officiella steget in i EU genom v\u00e5rt gemensamma Brysselkontor skapar vi m\u00f6jlighet att flytta fram positionerna inte bara inom EU utan ocks\u00e5 i \u00f6kad samverkan i fr\u00e5gor som r\u00f6r forskning och h\u00f6gre utbildning med \u00f6vriga delar av v\u00e4rlden. Det h\u00e4r samarbetet var en av de saker jag framh\u00f6ll n\u00e4r jag talade vid seminariet tidigare i dag. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
