Congrats to all PhD:s – you are the future of the life science sector

All PhD:s together with their families and supervisors in the Stockholm City Hall.

On Friday evening, I had the great pleasure of hosting Karolinska Institutet’s conferment ceremony at the beautiful Stockholm City Hall. It is a fantastic opportunity to congratulate the promovendi, honorary doctors and gold meddalists for their achievements, and to thank them for important contributions made for our university. The shared knowledge they have contributed to is important in the advancement of welfare and improved health.

The contributions of PhD:s from Karolinska Institutet will make a difference to Sweden’s continued role as a strong research nation. Those who pursue a research career certainly have an exciting future ahead, making discoveries and improvements, big and small, that continually help to improve human health. The health services are in great need of people with a research training, who can work both clinically and with education and research. We must take an active part in the change that this sector is now undergoing, and doctorate holders will play an important role. The Stockholm County Council will remain our most important collaborator.

Within global health, we are facing enormous challenges before adequate healthcare can be made available worldwide.  Additionally, many problems that we face at home have causes and probably also solutions that lie outside of Sweden. The Life Science sector has historically played an important role in Sweden.  To maintain and strengthen this position and ensure a bright future for this vital part of the Swedish business sector –  including major pharmaceutical companies and start-up companies exploiting exciting new knowledge such as digital health – we all need to contribute with our different areas of expertise ,.

The challenges are many!
