Snart får vi veta! Processen att utse en ny rektor vid KI fortgår och förra veckan presenterades de två slutkandidaterna för hörandeförsamlingen. Efteråt fanns tid för diskussion och olika åsikter vädrades. Det är fantastiskt att vi har högt i tak och att alla får göra sin röst hörd. Den friheten är värd att försvara! KI:s rektor ska representera universitetet i olika sammanhang gentemot andra lärosäten, departement, region, näringsliv och internationellt. För mig som prefekt är det också viktigt att rektor arbetar internt med KI:s verksamhet i nära dialog med institutionerna. Jag har under mina första tre år som prefekt saknat denna direkta kontakt. Institutionsgruppens prefekter har mycket uppskattade gemensamma möten med rektor och dekan ca 1 ggr/termin, men som prefekt vill jag också kunna lyfta frågor direkt från institutionen till rektor och universitetsdirektör.

Under hösten ska KI ska under utse nya vice-rektorer och lärarrepresentanter till de tre kommittéerna och nya lärarrepresentanter till fakultetsnämnden och fakultetsrådet. NVS har nominerat en rad personer och vi hoppas att så många som möjligt av dem blir valda. Dessa personer är jätteviktiga i sina olika uppdrag och är också en länk från institutionsnivå upp till universitetsledningen. Denna typ av centrala uppdrag ersätts med en viss summa och jag kommer att fightas för att denna ersättning även i fortsättningen i sin helhet kommer från centrala medel. Vi är ett universitet och alla institutioner ska ha samma förutsättningar till representation i de centrala kommittéerna och nämnderna. Tack alla ni som ställer er till förfogande att arbeta med frågor som rör utbildning och forskning vid hela KI!

Varför skriver jag om det här? Jo, för att det spelar roll vilka som leder universitetet. För mig är det till exempel viktigt att KI har forskning både med spets och bredd, detta ger förutsättningar att bedriva undervisning med hög kvalitet och attrahera de mest motiverade studenterna. Varför vill vi göra det? Jo, för bland dem finns återväxten. Nya doktorander, forskare och lärare som sedan ska ta stafettpinnen. Den här veckan ska jag göra bland det roligaste jag vet: jag ska starta årets omgång av ett moment i en kurs på masterprogrammet i biomedicin. Att träffa och undervisa dessa kompetenta, nyfikna, drivna personer ger mig energi. Det är en förmån och håller mig uppdaterad och på tå. Genom åren har vi handlett en rad masterstudenter på mitt labb. En del har sedan gått vidare till forskarutbildning och disputerat vid olika institutioner. Kanske några av dem blir framtidens akademiska ledare?

Observations during election times

Soon we will find out! The process of appointing a new president at KI continues and last week the two final candidates were presented to the hearing assembly. Afterwards there was time for discussion and different opinions were aired. It’s fantastic that we have a ‘high ceiling’ and that everyone gets to make their voice heard. That freedom is worth defending! KI’s president must represent the university in various contexts vis-à-vis other universities, ministries, regions, business and internationally. For me as head of department, it is also important that the president works internally with KI’s operations in close dialogue with the departments. During my first three years as head of department, I have lacked this direct contact. The heads of the department group have highly valued joint meetings with the president and dean about once per semester, but as head of department I also want to be able to raise questions directly from the department to the president and university director.

During the autumn, KI must appoint new vice presidents and teacher representatives to the three committees and new teacher representatives to the faculty board and the faculty council. NVS has nominated several people and we hope that as many of them as possible will be elected. These people are extremely important in their various assignments and are also a link from departmental level up to the university management. This type of central assignment is compensated with a certain amount, and I will fight for this compensation to continue to come entirely from central funds. We are one university, and all departments must have the same conditions for representation in the central committees and boards. Thanks to all of you who make yourself available to work on issues related to education and research at the entire KI!

Why am I writing about this? Well, because it matters who leads the university. For me, for example, it is important that KI has both cutting-edge and broad-based research, this provides the conditions to conduct high-quality teaching and attract the most motivated students. Why do we want to do that? Yes, because among them is the regrowth. New doctoral students, researchers and teachers who will then take up the baton. This week I’m going to do one of the best things I know: I’m going to start this year’s round of a part of a course in the master’s program in biomedicine. Meeting and teaching these competent, curious, driven people give me energy. It’s a perk and keeps me updated and on my toes. Over the years, we have supervised several master’s students in my lab. Some have since gone on to postgraduate studies and defended their dissertations at various institutions. Maybe some of them will become academic leaders of the future?
