Tisdagen den 9 april har jag den stora äran att välkomna Världshälsoorganisationens generaldirektör, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, hit till Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Tedros är på ett kort besök i Stockholm och det är med stor glädje jag kan konstatera att han accepterat min inbjudan att besöka KI och att han därmed kommer att tillbringa ett par timmar på vårt campus i Solna.

Som ni säkert känner till så är WHO den enskilt viktigaste aktören när det gäller global hälsa och det kommer att bli mycket intressant att få generaldirektörens syn på forskningens och utbildningens roll i de utmaningar vi har framför oss. Det gäller inte minst den koppling som finns till Agenda 2030 och de 17 utvecklingsmålen som ingår där.

Vi kommer att arrangera ett öppet möte i Årets byggnad Biomedicum med Dr. Tedros mellan kl 10 och 11.30 den 9 april. Temat kommer att vara “Research and Higher Education for Health – in the context of Agenda 2030” och förutom generaldirektören kommer också flera aktuella och engagerade KI-forskare delta i en paneldiskussion som kommer att kretsa kring hur högre utbildning och forskning, inte minst experimentell grundforskning, bidrar till arbetet med en bättre global hälsa.

Mötet med Dr Tedros kommer att vara öppet för alla på KI, men tyvärr är antalet platser begränsat. Först till kvarn gäller. Mer information och länk till anmälan finns här.

WHO´s Director-General to visit Karolinska Institutet

Tuesday April 9, I have the great honor to welcome the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to Karolinska Institutet. Dr. Tedros is on a short visit to Stockholm and I am very happy that he accepted my invitation to visit KI and that he will spend some time here at our Solna campus.

WHO is, as you surely are well aware of, the single most important player in the field of global health and it will be very interesting to get the Director General’s view when it comes to roles of education and research in handling the global challenges we face. This applies not least in the context of  Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

We will arrange an open meeting in Biomedicum (recently appointed “Construction of the year”) with Dr Tedros, starting at 10 am, April 9. Title remains to be determined but the lecture will revolve around the theme  Research and Higher Education for Health – in the context of Agenda 2030. In addition to the Director-General, several dedicated KI researchers will participate in a panel discussion that will have a particular focus on the importance of experimental basic research in our endeavors to improve global health.

The meeting will be open to all KI students and staff, but the number of seats are limited. First come first served. More information about the event and how to register can be found here.
