Hållbarhetsdagen 2020: Samarbete krävs för att klara utmaningarna

English version below

Sustainability Day 2020:  Collaboration is needed to meet the challenges

Tomorrow it is time for Sustainability Day 2020 here at Karolinska Institutet. We are struggling to cope with the current pandemic and the toll it takes on patients and on the society at large. As a university we must focus on the acute crisis but also attend to its cause and long term consequences. Thus the current crisis does not detract from the importance of sustainability and the timeliness of our sustainability day. I would say: quite the opposite. Covid-19 forces us to rethink how we build resilience and preparedness in an interconnected world.

This year, KI will organize a full day focusing on the UN’s global development goal number 12: Sustainable consumption and production. The original idea was to host a campus event, but for the above reasons, we have moved the program into the digital world. By making the event digital, we can reach more participants, and the webinars are of course open to anyone interested.

There are many exciting items on the agenda. Among others, there will be webinars with Alexandra Davidsson, Foundation Conscious Consumption, and with Karin Bradley, KTH and the National Agency for Public Procurement. There is also a great opportunity to fix your bike online and take a quiz to test your sustainability skills. A broad spectrum indeed.

A transition to sustainable consumption and production of goods and services is required to reduce the negative impact on climate,  environment and health. This is also a major challenge for health care facilities. More innovation is needed in this area. Here KI has an important task.

Our sustainability day joins KI students, employees and KI partners such as Akademiska Hus. Collaboration is key to the much needed transformation to sustainable health and a more sustainable world. All businesses and public and private actors must find their role in this. Everyone is needed, everyone is important. Of course, this applies very much to a university like Karolinska Institutet. In KI’s Strategy 2030, the issue of sustainability is a fundamental pillar. It is not by chance that our new strategy has 2030 as its time horizon. We chose to apply the same time perspective as UN:s Agenda 2030 so as to align our local endeavors with the global ones.

It is deeply rooted in a university that we should think and act in a long-term perspective. When we write in our new vision that we should work for “a better health for all” we include both extant and future generations. It is in this context that sustainability is so important.

See you on Digital Sustainability Day tomorrow!
