Rosling seminar 2022 – Our planet, our health in an intergenerational dialogue

At KI we are pleased to host the annual Rosling Seminar, in collaboration with the WHO and in memory of our esteemed colleague Professor Hans Rosling. The 2022 seminar will be held next Wednesday, the 5th of October, at 13.00-14.30 (CEST). It will be a digital seminar, open to all, and with no prior registration needed.

The Rosling seminar is part of a deepened collaboration between WHO and KI.

Our planet, our health

This year’s topic is Our planet, our health. How do we safeguard human health in a rapidly changing world where we challenge and even transgress the planetary boundaries and where poverty persists?

The seminar intends to highlight the fact-based connection between human and planetary health. This topic should be of broad interest, not least for our students who will be carving out their careers in a world replete with challenges that require their transformative skills. The consequences of planetary ill-health are seen around the world, but its impact on the poorest is especially notable. That is why our focus on eradicating poverty must never be abandoned.

Business as usual is not sustainable

The complex problems at hand require cross-sectoral solutions, for our planet and our health. As professor Samuel Myers, Principal Research Scientist at Harvard T.H. Chan of School of Public Health and Director of the Planetary Health Alliance, and one of this year’s speakers points out: we cannot continue with business as usual. We can walk ourselves off a cliff or we can transform the way we live and embrace the future.

This year’s seminar is built around an intergenerational dialogue. The vision of Karolinska Institutet says that we should strive for a better health for all. The all-important word “all” says that we should include everyone, regardless of nationality, age, or socioeconomic status, and also generations that are still not born.
