Välkommen till nytt år på Karolinska Institutet

English version below

Narrow nationalism, me-first approaches, vaccine hoarding and inequity: all these failures and more have powered the pandemic. The longer inequity continues, the greater the chance of this virus mutating into new variants that we can neither prevent nor predict, locking us into a cycle of continued loss, hardship and restrictions. But if we end inequity, we end the pandemic, and end the global nightmare we have all lived through. And this is possible. Vaccine production is ramping up. During December, COVAX shipped its 800 millionth vaccine dose, half of which have been shipped in the past three months. This trend can and must continue.”

My first resolution is to do all I can to help end the pandemic, in collaboration with all governments, stakeholders and communities. To do that, we need all countries to work together to reach the global target of vaccinating 70% of people in all countries by the middle of 2022.

Second, we need to build a stronger global framework for global health security. 2022 marks the start of a negotiations by countries on a global pandemic accord to strengthen the governance, financing, systems and tools the world needs to prevent, prepare for, detect and respond rapidly to epidemics and pandemics.

And third, all countries must invest in stronger primary health care, as the foundation of universal health coverage.”

Welcome to a new year at Karolinska Institutet

2022 might turn out to be a challenging year. The pandemic will continue to make its mark on us all and the rapid spread of the omicron variant is ample proof that the current health crisis is far from over. This virus eludes us and puts research, education, treatment, and prevention to the test.

In the poorer and most vulnerable parts of the world, where the vaccination rate is low, there is a risk of widespread infections and viral mutations – something that, in turn, can affect the rest of the world. The pandemic impacts health also through reduced access to care and treatment, inadequate schooling, and deteriorating mental health.

In other words, it would be easy to paint 2022 in gloomy colours. Yet there are obvious bright sides too. The way the world has pulled together to fight this virus is remarkable and has generated a wealth of knowledge in record time. I am delighted that KI is in the middle of this vast international movement and that our scientists are at the forefront in many fields.

Decades of basic research

And we must not forget that behind the advances that we’ve seen over the past two years lie decades of basic research, the long-term work that sows the seeds of scientific breakthroughs. We now have to reinforce interdisciplinary research to prepare ourselves better for the next pandemic or health crisis. With the establishment of our Health Emergency and Pandemic Science Centre, KI’s contribution to these efforts will be even more explicit and powerful.

Despite the serious tone of his new year statement, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, nevertheless held out a candle of hope:

He also made three New Year resolutions, which I also subscribe to, and which are fully in line with KI’s objectives and vision:

Besides all the activities coupled to the ongoing pandemic, there is much on our agenda for 2022. Here are some key points:

  • Issues concerning responsible internationalisation, academic freedom, and institutional autonomy will become increasingly pressing for KI and for academia at large. Much is already being done, and I expect to be initiating an international debate on such matters at a conference in May. In this conference we will engage our international Advisory Group for Global Engagement, which has in effect been operating since last August.
  • Stronger foundations and conditions for both clinical and experimental research. We will look at issues like financial sustainability, legal and practical opportunities to use patient data, and access to effective, modern, and well-developed infrastructure.
  • Sustain and enhance positive trends in our collaboration with Region Stockholm. Among other things we will see how we can bolster our collaboration in the field of precision medicine and how we can create the best possible conditions for clinical placements of our students.
  • Our continuing efforts to create an innovative, creative and high-quality  life-science hub in the Stockholm region. Much is being done,  especially around KI’s Flemingsberg and Solna campuses, such as the forthcoming establishment of the IVI (International Vaccination Institute) and the construction of the Forskaren i Hagastaden building.
  • The 2022 election. Sweden will go to the polls in September, and we need to do all we can to bring higher education and research onto the political agenda. In the previous election, these issues were pretty much conspicuous by their absence
  • In 2021, we worked hard to develop pedagogical, technical, and learning aspects of our programmes and courses, and we will continue to do so in 2022. We will retain our focus on teaching and education and see how we can benefit properly from the investments that have been made in digital technologies under the current pandemic.

In closing, I’d like to express a very concrete hope for the new year: that 2022 will be the year that sees the release of Ahmadreza Djalali and his return to his family and his work here in Sweden.
